What is Ragi? This grain was used traditionally in food but slowly it got replaced by wheat, rice, and maize. However, this super grain has made comeback in our daily diet due to its high nutritional value. It contains the germ, bran, and endosperm all three parts of the kernel. But other refined grains only contain endosperm. Ragi is one such super grain that has recently made a comeback. Ragi is a rich source of good carbohydrates and since it is too tiny to be polished or processed it is mostly consumed in its purest form.
This crop grows in high altitudes and can withstand harsh weather conditions, making it perfectly suited for the Indian climatic conditions. Because of its high nutritional value, Ragi can be placed at the pinnacle of food grains. ‘Ragi‘ in Kannada, Hindi, and Telugu, ‘Madua‘ in Bengali, ‘Nachni‘ in Marathi, and ‘Kezhvaragu‘ in Tamil.
